North Esk Hut (Dilapidated)

North Esk Hut (Dilapidated) is a Department of Conservation backcountry hut in Lake Sumner Forest Park (Canterbury), used as a basic three-bunk shelter in a dilapidated condition. It is first come, first served, with bookings not required, and dogs are not allowed.

The hut has a fireplace and pit latrine toilets, but no drinking water and no mattresses are provided—bring your own water supply and bedding. There is no DOC track access, so you’ll need route planning and navigation (map, compass, and GPS) before you go, and be prepared for unbridged river/stream crossings if conditions require it.
