Old Man Hut

Old Man Hut is a 5-bunk backcountry hut operated by the Department of Conservation in Mount Richmond Forest Park. It sits at 1140 m in a large grassy clearing between Old Man Peak and Mt Rintoul, and is part of the Te Araroa Trail.

Use stays to the standard DOC hut style: no bookings are required and it’s first come, first served. A hut ticket is required for each night you use the hut (put it in the honesty box); an alternate Te Araroa Trail Pass can cover Te Araroa walkers. Beds include mattresses, there’s a fireplace, and drinking water is untreated; toilets use a pit latrine.
