Stony Stream Bivvy

Stony Stream Bivvy is a basic two-bunk hut in Hanmer Forest Park, run by the Department of Conservation. It sleeps two (two canvas bunks) and is set up for backcountry bivvy-style use in the North Canterbury and Arthur’s Pass area, with use operating as first come, first served and no bookings required.

Access is via route planning from over Charlies Saddle in the St James Conservation Area—there is no DOC track access—so plan navigation and expect to manage stream crossings yourself. The hut has facilities including a pit latrine toilet; if river/side-stream crossings are involved, don’t cross when flooded or when safe entry/exit points can’t be found.
