Tararua Hut
Tararua Hut (also called Hodder Huts) is a 6-bunk backcountry hut in the Inland Kaikoura Range, operated by the Marlborough Tramping Club. The hut was built in 1970 and later transferred to the Marlborough Tramping Club in 1985; it sits alongside the larger Murray Adrian Hut.
Staying requires an access number arranged in advance through the Marlborough Tramping Club, and visitors must also obtain permission to access Gladstone Downs land. Apply by email with your party details at least 48 hours before departure, and have your access number displayed on the vehicle dashboard when you park at Gladstone Downs.
The approach via the Hodder River is a serious undertaking with many river crossings (typically 80+). Expect 6–8 hours and roughly a 1000 m climb to reach the hut; there are no easy exits if the river is in flood, so river conditions drive whether you can safely continue.
