Tataweka Hut
Tataweka Hut is a standard 6-bunk backcountry hut in Te Urewera (East Coast region). Care for the Te Urewera tracks and facilities is carried out by Te Uru Taumatua – Ngāi Tūhoe’s operational entity under the Department of Conservation.
Use is first come, first served—no standard booking is required. To stay, you buy a Standard Hut Ticket (blue for adults, yellow for youth) for each night and place it in the honesty box at the hut; alternatively, a Backcountry Hut Pass provides unlimited use at most Standard and Serviced huts for a 12 month period. Adult rates are $10 per night (youth 5–17: $5 per night; children/infants 0–4: free) up to 30 June 2026, with updated rates from 1 July 2026.
Inside, the hut provides mattresses, a fireplace, and pit latrine toilets. Water is untreated. The DOC page for Tataweka Hut is the central place to check the current fee/ticket instructions before you go.
