Wahaatua Hut

Wahaatua Hut is a backcountry hut in the Urutawa Conservation Area near Opotiki, New Zealand. It’s a 6-bunk hut for trampers who want an overnight stop in this bush-and-stream country, with basic hut-style sleeping facilities and a simple setup for managing meals and waste while out on the route.

Use is first-come, first-served with standard backcountry hut fees rather than advance reservations. Expect mattresses, heating, and basic toilet facilities, and plan to bring a sleeping bag plus your own cooking gear (including a gas cooker). Typical hut fee payment is handled either with a backcountry hut ticket/pass or by self-registration at the hut with payment in the cash box.
